BERKELEY - Behind a second period goal from senior Megan Psyllos, the California field hockey team edged Pacific, 1-0, in a preseason match Saturday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field.

"It served the purpose of a first scrimmage," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We're toying with a new formation. We have a lot of new players with multiple talents, so we're trying to find them the right position. Overall, I'm really pleased. I thought it was a pretty high-quality effort for being understandably tired at this point in the preseason."

Psyllos, who scored two goals in 2009, collected a cross pass from freshman Shannon Elmitt and slapped a shot from the top left corner of the circle that beat the Pacific keeper to her left.

Last season's leading scorer, junior Erin Magill recorded four shots, all of which came on penalty corners. Senior Lisa Lohre also tallied a shot on goal.

The Tigers made a late attempt to tie the game when Sarah Miceli notched a shot on goal, but Cal keeper Maddie Hand made the save to preserve the shutout victory for the Bears.

Cal welcomes Saint Joseph's to Maxwell Family Field Saturday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. The 2010 season opener is slated for Aug. 27 against Miami of Ohio at 5 p.m. at Maxwell Field.
