BERKELEY - The California field hockey team shut out Saint Joseph's, 3-0, in a preseason match Saturday morning at Maxwell Family Field. Freshman Andrea Earle notched a goal and an assist, and had three shots on goal. Lauren Livingston and Kendra Bills also scored for the Golden Bears.

"It was an improvement over last weekend, which is what you want to see," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We had a few more people back who were hurt last weekend, so I got a better look at the team. We generated more shots on goal, which was one of our pregame focus points.

I'm realizing that we have a few people who are pretty versatile, so it's kind of a good challenge to have in finding where to fit them in. I think Andy Earle is showing she's going to be a pretty versatile player. I played her in the midfield, backfield and the forward line."

Earle scored her goal in the fifth minute of the contest. Her shot deflected off of a defender and into the cage. Earle earned her assist on Livingston's goal with less than a minute left before halftime. Earle took a shot that Livingston tipped past the keeper to her right.

"It was a corner shot and Andy hit it right post," Livingston said. "I just had a stick on the floor and was able to tip it in and we got our second goal."

The Bears earned their third score in the 55th minute. Sophomore Rachelle Comeau took a shot that Bills redirected between the keeper's legs.

Posting 16 shots in the match, Cal was on the offensive attack for the majority of the contest, forcing Saint Joseph's keepers to make seven saves. The Bears also earned 10 penalty corners to the Hawks' one.

Cal's tough defense allowed the Hawks to only tally three shots on goal. Onstead gave credit to senior Megan Psyllos for her defensive effort on Saturday.

While Earle led the Bears with four shots, junior Erin Magill also recorded three shots of her own.

The Bears have one more tune up exhibition match at Stanford on Monday before the season opener on Friday, Aug. 27, against Miami of Ohio at Maxwell Family Field.
