BERKELEY -
Following a scoreless first half, the California field hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the second half and shut out Pacific, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at a foggy Maxwell Family Field. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 in NorPac contests and 3-4 overall on the season. The Tigers remain winless on the year at 0-7, 0-2.
Cal's team leaders in goals thus far, senior Megan Psyllos and sophomore Claire Dougherty each scored. Dougherty tallied Cal's first goal in the 42nd minute when she collected a rebound from a shot off of a penalty corner and put it in the cage. Psyllos made it 2-0 Cal four minutes later when she tipped a shot by junior Erin Magill past the Pacific keeper and into the cage. Dougherty and Psyllos each have five goals on the year, and Dougherty leads in overall points with 11 (one assist).
Sophomore Kendra Bills notched her first goal of the season; the second of her collegiate career, in the 55th minute to put the seal on the victory for Cal. Freshman Jordan O'Reilly beat her defender down field and was able to find the open Bills at the top of the circle. Bills blasted a shot past the Tigers' keeper for the score. O'Reilly's assist was her first point in 2010. She also posted a shot on goal.
Junior Maddie Hand and sophomore Haleh Nourani each played a half and recorded two saves each to earn the combined shutout victory.
Cal doesn't have much time to rest before its next match. The Bears head down the Peninsula to face No. 16 Stanford tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. on The Farm.
