Final Stats
FULLERTON, Calif. - Rebounding from a two-run showing in the first game of the day, the No. 10/11 California softball team exploded for 18 runs in an 18-8 victory over IPFW on Friday afternoon in the second game at the DeMarini Classic.
Elia Reid had three hits, including a three-run triple in the first and a two-run homer in the fifth, for a game-high six RBI all the while coming home to score thrice.
Arianna Erceg earned her very first collegiate win, striking out three in four innings of work. The right-hander also notched her first at bats, getting one hit to drive in one run.
"Getting my first collegiate win is a great feeling and I was really excited about being out on the field," Erceg said after the game. "I couldn't have done it without my team behind me on defense and our strong bats."
Seeing her first time in the circle as a Golden Bear was Cassandra Vega, who pitched the fifth inning. In addition to her debut in the circle, Vega also hit 1.000 with two hits and two RBI in her first collegiate at bats.
Cal opened the game with seven runs in the top of the first. The Bears built that lead with one run in the second and four in the third before the Mastodons even got on the board. IPFW, which is a short way of saying Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, avoided the shutout with three runs in the third, one in the fourth and five in the fourth.
Thirteen different Bears got at bats in the game with nine of them notching at least one hit to attribute for Cal's 13 collective hits and all but 10 coming around to score. The Bears worked IPFW starter Rachel Staschuck with seven earned runs and then teed off on reliever Megan Flenniken for nine. Four Mastadon errors accounted for the extraneous unearned two runs.
Top 1 - Cal 8, IPFW 0:
Jamia Reid began the game with a single up the middle and Britt Vonk followed suit with a bunt single to the pitcher to get aboard. The throw from the pitcher on Vonk's connection went into right, giving Reid and Vonk plenty of time to advance to third and second, respectively. Frani Echavarria scored Reid with a hit to short. Amy Bishop was hit to load the bases for Erceg, who took a ball to the face mask for a painful RBI.
Victoria Jones earned a walk for the third consecutive RBI and run for the Bears. Elia Reid had a two-out triple to right, scoring Jones, Erceg and Bishop. Returning the inning to where it began, Jamia Reid came up to bat and put a shot into short left field, where the fielder dived for it and the ball bounced off her glove. Elia Reid scored off the error for the final run of the inning.
Top 2 - Cal 8, IPFW 0:
Jolene Henderson sent the ball flying sky high and out of the park for a solo shot, upping Cal's lead to eight.
Bottom 2 - Cal 8, IPFW 0:
The Mastodons got their second and third hits of the game, but failed to advance anyone past second. Solid Cal defense closed the inning without a run, leaving one Mastodon stranded.
Top 3 - Cal 12, IPFW 0:
Victoria Jones took a pitch between the shoulders and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Diane Leider hit the ball to third baseman Ashleigh Bousquet, who looked Jones back at second too long to make a play at first. Jones went to third and Leider to second on another wild pitch. Elia Reid singled to left, and a fielding error allowed Jones to score, Leider to go to third and Reid to second. Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk drew back-to-back walks to score Leider.
Henderson hit a ground ball to Bousquet at third, and the throw home got Elia Reid out on the force but the bases were still loaded for Echavarria, who notched an RBI ground out to second, scoring Vonk.
Bottom 3 - Cal 12, IPFW 3:
Erceg issued three walks to load the bases for Courtney Cronin, who singled up the middle to plate Sara Jacobson and Brittany Kachur. With runners on the corners, Kirsten Rohn singled up the middle to score Karpun. With the final three batters of the inning, Erceg struck one out, walked another and got the final to line out.
Top 4 - Cal 14, IPFW 3:
Erceg and Leider singled while Victoria Jones walked to load the bases for Elia Reid. Reid reached on a fielder's choice to short while Erceg came home to score. Later in the inning, Vega singled through the left side for her very first hit and RBI of the season and her Cal career.
Bottom 4 - Cal 14, IPFW 4:
Rachel Staschuk homered to right for first of three hits but the sole run of the inning.
Top 5 - Cal 18, IPFW 4:
After notching her first hit of the year earlier in the game, Diane Leider tallied her first RBI with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Alex Robben. In the next at bat, Elia Reid homered to left, bringing around Victoria Jones, who had singled to short. With LaRisa Jones at second after reaching on a fielding error and moving to second on a Vonk single, Vega hit one down the right-field line to plate Jones for Cal's final run of the game.
Bottom 5 - Cal 18, IPFW 8:
The Mastodons loaded the bases with their first three batters on a single and two walks. Right fielder Sara Hopwood had a sac fly to right to score Ashleigh Bousquet. With runners on first and second, Staschuk singled the through the right side, plating Alex Bousquet. For the last score of the game, Kachur grounded out to Vega in the circle, allowing Audrey Mintari to come home.
What's Next:
Tournament play just does not stop for the Bears. This weekend's play wraps up Saturday with a 9 a.m. game versus Iowa (7-5) and an 11:15 a.m. match versus Murray State (2-4).
