BERKELEY - In a game that typified the rivalry between California and Stanford, the No. 11/10 Cardinal pulled out a 2-1 win over the No. 12 Golden Bears in the middle match of the Big Game series on Friday afternoon.

An error in the top of the first allowed two Stanford runs to score and give the Cardinal an early 2-0 lead.

The Bears responded with a score in their half of the first thanks to a grounder by Frani Echavarria that brought Britt Vonk home.

Cal falls to 29-9 overall and 6-5 in the Pac-10 Conference while Stanford moves to 32-9 and 6-5 in the Pac-10.

Jolene Henderson took the loss, despite not giving up an earned run, falling to 26-6.

Ashley Chinn earned her 15th win of the year while Teagan Gerhart notched her third save of the season.

Top 1 - Stanford 2, Cal 0:

Sarah Hassman singled to third to lead things off for the Cardinal. Corey Hanewich singled to center, and moved to second on the throw but Echavarria's gun held Hassman at third. Jenna Rich put a hit down the first-base line that first baseman Alex Robben got glove on but could not handle, plating Hassman and Hanewich.

Bottom 1 - Stanford 2, Cal 1:

Vonk hit the ball to Chinn in the circle, where it was fielded but the throw to first was too late. Jace Williams singled past shortstop to move Vonk to third and Williams advanced on the throw into the infield. Frani Echavarria hit a grounder at third baseman Jenna Becerra, who thought about throwing home but changed her mind and was too late to make any plate, with Vonk scoring and Echavarria reaching.
