The No. 12 California Golden Bears blanked the Pacific Tigers, 4-0, on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Maxwell Family Field. Senior defender Erin Magill had a goal and an assist in the victory.
The Tigers, who lost the first matchup of the season between the two teams, 10-0, came out firing, earning five penalty corners in the first six minutes of play, translating those into a pair of shots on goal.
After the early attack by Pacific, the Bears took control of the game. Senior defender Erin Magill took a shot off of a penalty corner. It was saved by the goalkeeper, deflecting off her legs pads to Shannon Elmitt who knocked it in for the score.
The Bears led, 1-0, at the break. They added their second goal of the game ten minutes into the second period when the Bears took advantage of a penalty corner. Instead of taking a shot directly off the corner, junior midfielder Deanna Kennedy passed the ball over to Magill who smashed a shot from the left side of the cage into the lower right corner of the goal.
Junior forward Claire Doughtery increased the Cal advantage to 3-0 when she took a long cross from freshman forward Lara Kruggel and tipped it up into the air and into the upper right corner of the net at the 51:28 mark.
Sophomore forward Andrea Earle added to her team leading goal total by scoring her tenth of the season. She actually passed the ball to Magill who then passed it back to Earle who knocked it in from the front of the goal to give Cal a 4-0 lead with ten minutes remaining.
Pacific's best chance to score in the second half actually came after time expired. The Bears were whistled for a foul with three seconds left in the game, setting up a penalty corner, but the Tigers could not cash in on the opportunity.
"I think our team was fantastic in the second half," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "We are going to spend some time talking about the first half, though, and see how we can avoid those situations (of coming out flat)."
Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Henderson made her first career start in goal. She played the entire first half, logging three saves and earning the victory to go 1-0 on the season. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Hand played the second half in the net without facing a shot on goal.
"Courtney gets our Man-of-the-Match today with her three saves," Onstead said. "Maddie had a great game at Stanford. I just thought this was a great opportunity to give Courtney a start. If something were, God forbid, to happen to Maddie, we wanted Courtney to know that we trust her and believe in her. And she went out there and did it. And it was great."
The Bears, who improved to 8-2 on the season and 2-1 in NorPac games, are back on the road next week, heading to Philadelphia to take on St. Jospeh's, Temple, and Drexel.
