PHILADELPHIA -
The No. 11 California Golden Bears got their third shutout of the season, blanking the Temple Owls, 4-0, Friday in Philadelphia. Sophomore forward Jordan O'Reilly had a hand in three of Cal's four goals.
Freshman forward Lara Kruggel, who also had a goal on Thursday at Saint Joseph's, scored the first goal of the game, taking a pass from the right side off the stick of O'Reilly to tip the ball in to give Cal a 1-0 advantage ten minutes into the game.
At the 23:30 mark, senior defender Erin Magill took a shot on goal that was saved by the goalie. O'Reilly came up with the rebound off the save and smacked the ball in to give Cal a 2-0 edge. O'Reilly scored again five minutes later after getting a pass from junior forward Claire Dougherty from the left side. She took on the keeper one-on-one and won the battle, giving Cal a 3-0 lead, the same advantage they held at the start of the second half.
Cal's final goal came at the 51:40 mark where a scramble in front of the net resulted in a goal by senior forward Megan Shimojima, her seventh of the season, with an assist by Kruggel, her seventh of the season.
"We were looking to string two halves together and play a complete game today," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "We were as sharp in the second half as the first, which is what we went out there to do."
Senior goalkeeper Maddie Hand played the first half in goal, getting the win and improving to 9-2 on the season. Freshman goalie Courtney Hendrickson played the second half, logging three saves.
"They only took one shot on Maddie, but they made Courtney work," Onstead said. "She kept the shutout for us with those three saves, so that was great."
O'Reilly, who grew up in Ambler, Penn., had two goals, her sixth and seventh of the season, and added an assist.
"Jordan played really well today in front of her hometown crowd," Onstead said. "A lot of time that adds pressure. She didn't let it get to her."
With the win, the Bears improve to 10-2 on the season while Temple falls to 3-8. This is the 13th time in Coach Onstead's 17 seasons as the Bears head coach that her team has won at least ten games.
Cal has one game remaining on their Philadelphia road trip. They take Saturday off and then are back on the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 2 when they take on the Drexel Dragons (7-3) at 9 a.m. Pacific Time.
