FRESNO, Calif. - Nine was the luckiest of numbers for No. 1/2 California softball scored nine runs on nine hits and No. 9 Jace Williams drove in the game-ending run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the 9-1 win over Purdue on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears improve to 20-0 while the Boilermakers drop to 12-6.
Cal earned a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to three hits and one Purdue error. Purdue got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the top of the fourth to which Britt Vonk answered with a two RBI single. With four runs on five hits and two Purdue errors in the sixth, Cal ended the game early.
Jolene Henderson threw the six-inning victory, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out five. Purdue's Alex Whittemore started, but lasted just 1.1 innings (3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) before Katie Hackney entered to pitch the final 4.1 (6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO).
Bottom of the Second - Purdue 0, Cal 3:
Kostreba singled through the left side and Cheyenne Cordes followed suit with a hit through the left side. Danielle Henderson walked to load the bases for Victoria Jones, who doubled to short, plating Kostreba and Cordes. Jamia Reid reached on an error at short, which allowed Henderson to score.
Top of the Fourth - Purdue 1, Cal 3:
Erika Petruzzi reached when her grounder took a bad hop at short and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Maia Monchek moved Petruzzi to third with a single down the left-field line and Petruzzi scored when Ashley Courntey singled to second.
Bottom of the Fourth - Purdue 1, Cal 5:
Danielle Henderson walked, moved to second on picture-perfect sac bunt by Victoria Jones. Frani Echavarria reached when she was hit by a pitch and both runners moved on a Jamia Reid groundout, setting the table for a two-RBI single up the middle by Britt Vonk.
Bottom of the Sixth - Purdue 1, Cal 9:
Danielle Henderson hit a 210-foot solo shot to start things off for the Bears in what proved to be the final inning. Victoria Jones laced a shot into shallow center field, and Ashley Decker replaced her at first and promptly stole second. Decker moved to third on a yet another gorgeous bunt single by Jamia Reid. Reid stole second, and the second baseman tried to get Decker at third but an errant throw allowed Decker to score. Vonk singled to center, advancing Reid to third. Catcher Danielle Fletcher tried to hold Reid at third with a throw down, but there was no one there to receive the throw and Reid scored. Jace Williams ended the game by singling through the right side, scoring Vonk.
