BERKELEY - The No. 1 California softball team built an insurmountable lead to defeat No. 3 Washington 5-3 on Sunday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Levine-Fricke Field. The Golden Bears struck with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to prevent the best comeback the Huskies could muster when UW scored once in the sixth and twice in the sixth.

Valerie Arioto pitched the seven-inning victory, striking out nine. Prior to the sixth inning, Arioto maintained a no-hitter and held the one-hitter until the top of the seventh. Arioto improves to 15-0.

Kasey Stanchek started for UW and lasted four full innings in which she allowed five earned runs on four hits and eight walks. Bryana Walker pitched the final two innings, striking out one, allowing one hit and one walk. Stanchek took her first loss of the year, dropping to 9-1.

Bottom of the Third - Washington 0, Cal 2:

Echavarria homered on a 1-2 count. With the bases loaded after Britt Vonk reached on a fielder's choice, Valerie Arioto and Breana Kostreba walked, Cheyenne Cordes earned a seven-pitch RBI walk.

Bottom of the Fourth - Washington 0, Cal 3:

Echavarria singled to right and scored from first when Britt Vonk doubled to the wall in right.

Bottom of the Fifth - UW 0, Cal 5:

With the bases loaded, Danielle Henderson singled through the left side to plate Breana Kostreba and Jace Williams, both of whom had walked.

Top of the Sixth - UW 1, Cal 5:

Hooch Fagaly doubled to center, scoring Williams.

Top of the Seventh - UW 3, Cal 5:

Courtney Gano and Victoria Hayward both doubled with the later scoring Gano. Kaitlin Inglesby plated Hayward with a single to left.

The Bears and Huskies close out the Pac-12 series in the second game of Sunday's twin bill at approximately 1 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
