BERKELEY - The second game of Sunday's doubleheader against No. 3 Washington slightly mirrored the first of the twin bill in that No. 1 California once again posted a big enough lead that the Huskies could not touch the Golden Bears no matter how hard UW tried at the end of the game. Despite two UW runs in the top of the seventh, Cal came away with a 6-4 win
Valerie Arioto got things going right away in the bottom of the first, driving the ball into the parking lot behind right center. The very next inning saw Jamia Reid plate two with a single to right. Down 4-0, the Huskies got on the board when Nikia Williams tallied a two-run homer to left.
The Bears gave themselves some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth, when Victoria Jones plated Cheyenne Cordes and Elia Reid drove in Jones. Though just three outs stood between the Bears and victory in the top of the seventh, the Huskies made Cal fans nervous when they tallied two runs on four hits but failed to push the game into the bottom of the seventh.
Thanks to the win, Cal nets the three-game sweep of Washington to improve to 33-1 and a steeling 6-0 in the Pac-12. After not having lost since Feb. 26, the Huskies fall to 33-4 and 3-3 in conference play.
Kaitlin Inglesby suffered her second loss of the year, with the Bears administering both defeats to drop Inglesby to 16-2 overall. The Bears tallied four earned runs on 12 hits off of Inglesby in 5.0 innings. Bryana Walker pitched the sixth, striking out one.
Jolene Henderson (18-1) pitched the 7.0 inning victory, striking out 10.
Bottom of the First - UW 0, Cal 2:
Jamia Reid yoked the ball to center and was sacrificed by Britt Vonk to second when Valerie Arioto destroyed the first pitch from Inglesby for her 15th homer of the year.
Bottom of the Second - UW 0, Cal 4:
Jamia Reid slapped it into right field, scoring Victoria Jones from third and Elia Reid from second.
Top of the Third - UW 2, Cal 4:
After Kimi Pohlman singled to short, Nikia Williams cleared two fences with her fourth homer of the year.
Bottom of the Fifth - UW 2, Cal 6:
Cheyenne Cordes singled to short and came home off a Victoria Jones double to the wall in center field. Elia Reid drove in Jones with a double down the right-field line.
Top of the Seventh - UW 4, Cal 6:
Victoria Hayward singled through the left side and scored from second when Williams singled just fair down the left-field line. Inglesby doubled to right center, plating Kimi Pohlman but it was not enough.
