Cal Beats Denmark, 4-3, in Exhibition
BERKELEY – With a former Golden Bear playing for the other side, California defeated the Danish national team, 4-3, in an exhibition dual match on Monday evening at the Berkeley Tennis Club.
Cal alumnus Christoffer Konigsfeldt is a member of the Denmark squad. He ended his college career in the 2013 NCAA doubles tournament, as he and Campbell Johnson reached the round of 32. Konigsfeldt, a three-time Pac-12 all-academic honoree, also played for his country last fall, when Cal defeated the Danes, 5-2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
On Monday, Rasmus Muller and Chris Raben opened doubles with a win for Denmark, as they beat Cal juniors Wyatt Houghton and Hasier Pastor, 6-3, on court three. The freshmen pair of Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura evened matters with a 6-4 victory over Jacob Melskens and Alex Konigsfeldt on court two. The Swedish tandem of junior Oskar Wikberg and sophomore Filip Bergevi clinched the doubles point for Cal with a 7-6(4) triumph over Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Thomas Kromann on court one.
Wikberg, ranked 81st in the ITA preseason poll, clinched the overall victory when he defeated Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 7-6(0), 7-6(3), on court two. The Bears also posted wins when Bergevi topped Melskens, 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-7, on court three, and Pastor knocked off Alex Konigsfeldt, 6-2, 7-6(4), on court four.
Playing on court one, Griffith fell to Kromann, 6-4, 7-5. On court four, Nishimura lost to Muller, 6-4, 6-2, and Denmark's Raben edged Houghton on court six, 7-5, 7-5.
Cal returns to collegiate action when it plays in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Friday through Tuesday at Stanford.
