MORAGA, Calif. – California Golden Bears reached the semifinals in doubles and the quarterfinals in singles as the rain-shortened Gael Classic began Saturday at Saint Mary's.

The Cal pair of Nikhil Jayashankar and Jordan Smith advanced to the in doubles flight B semifinals after an 8-1 win over Denver's Zach Fryer/Wyatt Lovera. The top-seeded team in flight B, the Bears had a bye in the round of 16.

In the flight A singles round of 16, Cal junior Oskar Wikberg – the No. 1 seed – beat Cal Poly's Corey Pang, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(9), and second-seeded junior Mads Engsted dispatched Pacific's Marlon Brand, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals. The two Bears had byes in the round of 32.

Cal junior Wyatt Houghton – the top seed in flight B singles – also reached the quarters via a 6-0, 7-6(0) victory over Denver's Wyatt Lovera.

The Gael Classic will end on Sunday. Originally scheduled as a three-day tournament, the tournament's Friday matches were rained out.
