ST. HELENA, Calif. – California's Filip Bergevi and Billy Griffith fell in the singles quarterfinals on the last day of the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Sunday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort. The Golden Bears won three of seven singles matches on the third day of the tournament.

“Playing in the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic tournament has always been good for our team, and this year was one of the best,” said Cal head coach Peter Wright, who co-founded the tournament 14 years ago with Meadowood Tennis Director Doug King. “All five of our players made progress this week, and some recorded significant wins over some of the top players in the USA.

“The competition was very strong, and we love bringing the best USTA juniors and the top college players to Napa Valley for the tournament. We're certainly indebted to Meadowood and Porsche for giving us the opportunity.”

Earlier Sunday, Bergevi, a sophomore ranked 120th, ended round-robin group play with an upset victory over Harvard's 18th-ranked Denis Nguyen, 7-5, 7-6(3), while Griffith, a freshman, topped North Carolina's Jack Murray, 6-0, 6-4. As winners of their respective groups, Griffith (3-0 record) and Bergevi (2-1) advanced to the Solinco Wild Card Shoot Out, giving them a chance to win the tournament championship and an accompanying wild card into a future USTA Pro Circuit tournament.

But Bergevi dropped a 10-7 match to Tulsa's Or Ram-Harel, while Griffith lost to Harvard's Sebastian Beltrame, 10-8. Beltrame eventually won the final.

Also in round-robin play on Sunday, Cal senior Gregory Bayane fell to Harvard's Nicky Hu, 6-2, 6-4, junior Hasier Pastor lost to UNC's 52nd-ranked Brett Clark, 7-5, 6-2, and Cal sophomore Andre Goransson defeated a member of the USTA Junior National Team.

There were no doubles matches played Sunday.

Next up for some of the Bears is the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, which run from Sept. 29-Oct. 5 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The pair of Bayane and senior Chase Melton will play in main draw doubles in Tulsa. Bergevi, Bayane, Goransson and junior Oskar Wikberg claimed spots in qualifying singles in the All-American Championships.
