BERKELEY -?Maegan Manasse captured the top doubles title with Denise Starr at the Cal Nike Fall Invitational, and then the sophomore beat Starr in the top singles final on Sunday as the tournament came to a close at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.

Starr, also a sophomore, and Manasse form the Bears' top-ranked doubles team; the sophomores earned the No. 11 spot in the ITA preseason poll. In the blue doubles final at Hellman, the top-seeded Manasse and Starr faced off with the second-seeded and 31st-ranked team of Zsofi Susanyi and Lynn Chi and beat their elder teammates, 8-4.

In the afternoon, Manasse played Starr in a final for the second time in their collegiate careers. Last November, Starr defeated Manasse in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational championship match, 6-1, 6-2. The 43rd-ranked Manasse evened their short series at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 25th-ranked Starr at Hellman.

“They both have come a long way since that (match at ASU),” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “They're very good friends and doubles partners. It's hard to play against your teammate. But I think they have both improved tremendously since then. They both worked on their fitness this summer, and this sets a pretty good example of what working hard can do when you really set your mind to your goals. They're off to a good start this year.”

On Sunday morning, Starr advanced to the final by topping Danielle Flores of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-4, in the blue semifinals. Manasse knocked off Arizona State's Ebony Panoho, 6-1, 6-1, to set up her match with Starr.

Bears reached two more finals on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. In the gold singles title match, Cal's Cecilia Estlander took on Kareena Mangi of Saint Mary's, but the Cal senior fell to the Gael, 7-6(5), 6-4. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Lin reached her first tournament final as a Bear, but she lost to Fresno State's Anne Susdorf, 7-5, 6-2, in the gold singles consolation final. Lin had beaten Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals.

In round-robin play, the Cal pair of Lin and freshman Lyann Hoang defeated San Francisco's Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Genevieve McCloskey, 8-5, at Hellman.

“It was a great showing by the Bears,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Really happy to have two Bears playing each other in the final of the top flight and have a Bear in the final of the second flight. We had an all-Cal doubles final as well. I'm very pleased.”

A contingent of Bears ? including Chi in main draw singles and the pair of Starr & Manasse in main draw doubles ? will next compete in the Riviera ITA All-American Women's Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., starting on Tuesday.
