Bears Pull Out Double OT Thriller
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Proving yet again that it doesn't mind a little extra work, the Cal men's water polo team withstood a challenge from No. 8-ranked Long Beach State and emerged with a victory as freshman Odysseas Masmanidis netted the winning goal in double overtime as the No. 3 Bears left Lindgren Aquatics Center with a 15-14 victory.
The win is Cal's third double-overtime victory this season and moves the Bears to 17-4 overall and 3-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Freshman Johnny Hooper continued his standout year with a season-high seven goals for the Bears. Masmanidis and Colin Mulcahy added three and Conor Neumann and Timothy Simenc added a goal apiece. Lazar Andric went the distance in goal and stopped nine shots.
Sunday's match went to extra time thanks to a flurry of offense from both teams in the second half. Cal led 7-5 at halftime but Long Beach State (9-11, 1-4) pulled even by the end of the third at 8-all. That's when the sparks really started to fly as each team found the net four times in the fourth period. A goal by Patrick Goodenough with 1:36 left put the 49ers ahead 12-11 but Hooper answered 21 seconds later, tying the score and forcing extra time.
The offenses continued to dominate in the first overtime period, with Hooper and Masmanidis each scoring a goal to put the Bears up 14-12 with 1:33 to play. Again Long Beach countered, and a goal by Jacob Fujioka with 20 seconds left tied it again at 14.
It didn't take long for Masmanidis to make his mark in the next overtime period. The native of Athens, Greece found the net just 14 seconds in, giving the Bears a lead to protect for the next 2 minutes and 46 seconds. That's exactly what Cal did, with Andric contributing two big saves along the way to preserve the victory.
Sunday's win capped a 1-1 weekend for the Bears after nearly knocking off No. 1-ranked UCLA on Saturday. Cal now returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex for the next four matches, beginning with Saturday's match against USC. That game will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be televised by Pac-12 Networks. The Bears wrap up the weekend Sunday by hosting San Jose State at noon.
