Cal Baseball Topples Pacific, 13-6
STOCKTON, CALIF.– Freshman shortstop Preston Grand Pre and senior third baseman Chris Paul homered, and senior left-hander Chris Muse-Fisher provided outstanding relief pitching as Cal won at Pacific, 13-6, Tuesday night at Klein Family Field in Stockton. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 13-3 and have now won 12 of their last 13 games and eight straight contests leading into this weekend's Pac-12 opening series versus No. 8-ranked Oregon at Evans Diamond.
Grand Pre's homer was the first of his college career and was a three-run shot in the second inning that helped Cal come back from a 2-0 deficit. The Bears ended up scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. Paul hit his homer, a two-run shot, in the third inning to up Cal's lead to 7-4. Paul finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Other top hitters for Cal were sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp (3-for-5, RBI) and sophomore first baseman Lucas Erceg (2-for-5, RBI). Erceg, who is leading the Bears with a .450 average, has now hit safely in all 16 games this season.
Muse-Fisher (1-1) ended up getting the win, coming in in the second inning and throwing 4.1 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Erik Martinez and sophomore right-hander Alex Schick also performed well, each pitching two innings and recording three strikeouts with no walks.
Cal entertains the highly-ranked Ducks March 13-15 in Berkeley with game times at 7 p.m. Friday night, 6 p.m. Saturday night and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Bears' 13-3 start is their best start since beginning the 2008 season 12-1-1.
