Cal Tipped by USF, 3-1
SAN FRANCISCO - Cal baseball received some outstanding pitching Tuesday at San Francisco - especially from sophomore right-hander Alex Schick who threw 5.0 no-hit innings with six strikeouts - but the Golden Bears were not able to take advantage of offensive opportunities, falling to the Dons, 3-1, at Benedetti Diamond.
With the loss, Cal dropped to 15-5 and USF improved to 8-13.
The Golden Bears scored first in the contest in the fifth when freshman left fielder Denis Karas led-off the inning with a double to right field and later scored on sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp's sacrifice fly to right field.
But, that was all of Cal's scoring as the Bears stranded 10 runners on base. Cal pitching was able to get out of jams until Collin Monsour, who had five strikeouts in 3.0 iinnings, gave up a two-run double to Nico Giarratano in the eighth inning.
The Bears out-hit USF, 8-4, with two hits apiece from Karas, Knapp and freshman catcher Brett Cumberland.
Cal will next try to get back on the winning track when it travels to Washington for a three-game Pac-12 series, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
