BERKELEY – Oskar Wikberg topped Matt Cowley in singles to clinch No. 30 California's eventual 7-0 victory over Utah on a sunny Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears, who improved their record to 14-5 (2-0 in the Pac-12), won the doubles point then swept singles against the Utes, who fell to 10-8 (0-2 Pac-12).

Wikberg, a junior, beat Cowley, 6-1, 6-3, on court four (Savides Sullivan Court).

Earlier, the Cal pair of junior Mads Engsted and sophomore Filip Bergevi beat Parker McGuiness and Jamey Swiggart, 6-2, on court two (Bud Chandler Court) to clinch the doubles point. First the pair of senior Gregory Bayane and freshman J.T. Nishimura quickly dispatched Johan Jonhagen and Santiago Sierra, 6-1, on court three (Mascarin Court).

Nishimura also beat Jonhagen in singles, 6-1, 6-1, on court five (Hirschler-Davidson Court) to make the score 2-0. The 100th-ranked Bergevi followed seconds later with his own 6-1, 6-1 victory on court two over McGuiness. Wikberg soon clinched the overall match two courts over.

The teams played out the last three matches, with the Bears getting wins from the 56th-ranked Goransson on court one (Newmark Stadium), Bayane on court three and Engsted on court six.

Cal has not lost a team point in winning five straight dual matches.

“Today was a great match for the Bears,” Cal associate head coach Tyler Browne said. “It started in doubles. We were able to implement all the game plans we talked about last night and this morning. We took the momentum and rode it into singles. Everybody showed up, and we had a great match.”

Browne lauded the play of Nishimura, saying, “He's trying to evolve his game, trying to implement a couple new game plans – using the slice a little bit, using the drop shot. He's doing a really good job of that.

"Also Filip Bergevi, on court two – he's coming of age right now. He's working on his returns, and he did a good job of coming forward and finishing off points. Both those guys had a great weekend.”

The Bears next travel to the Pacific Northwest to play at Washington on Friday, April, 3, and at Oregon on Saturday, April 4.
