BERKELEY – Denise Starr clinched doubles with
Maegan Manasse and then clinched the overall match in singles as seventh-ranked California defeated Colorado, 7-0, in the teams' Pac-12 opener on a warm Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Cal – the 2014 Pac-12 champion – improved its record to 8-2 (1-0 in the Pac-12). The Buffaloes' record now stands at 9-3 (0-1 Pac-12).
“We're happy to get that first conference win on the board and happy to be playing at home, with this beautiful weather for early March,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We did a good job of just kind of competing our way through it. Colorado competed hard especially in the singles. We definitely had to keep our focus, especially in the top couple courts. They have some good players up there. We're definitely happy with the victory today, and now we're able to turn our attention to Utah tomorrow.”
The Golden Bears clinched the doubles point when the fourth-ranked pair of sophomores Starr and Manasse beat Julyette Steur and Tina Bokhua, 8-2, on court one (Newmark Stadium). Earlier, the 12th-ranked pair of senior Zsofi Susanyi and junior Klara Fabikova dominated Alexandra Aiello and Ashley Tiefel, 8-0, on court two (Bud Chandler Court).
The Bears quickly secured the overall match in singles. Susanyi – ranked 24th – got things rolling on court four (Savides Sullivan Court), beating Aiello, 6-1, 6-1, to make the score 2-0. Freshman Karla Popovic – ranked 41st – soon made the score 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kyra Wojcik on court five (Hirschler-Davidson Court). The 61st-ranked Starr made the win official with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Nuria Ormeño Ruiz on court three (Mascarin Court).
After sophomore Stephane Lin eased to her first dual-match victory of the season on court six (Walter A. Haas, Jr. Court), on which she blanked Vitaliya Alkhovik, 6-0, 6-0, the 42nd-ranked Fabikova gave Cal a 6-0 lead with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Steur on court two.
At that point the only unknown was whether or not Manasse would prevail on court one after dropping the first set, 6-3, to Bokhua and trailing early in the second set, 4-2. But the nation's second-ranked player rallied to win the second set, 6-4, and force a 10-point match tiebreak. In the end, Manasse beat Bokhua, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(5), to wrap up the 7-0 victory.
“I think she just got off to a slow start in singles,” Augustus said of Manasse. “When you're not playing your best, you want to be able to find your way out of that type of situation, and I think Maegan did a good job of keeping her focus even though the team match was clinched.”
Of Cal's doubles performance, Augustus said, “On court three we didn't come out to a great start, and I would've liked to have seen us do a little bit better.” The pair of Lin and Popovic trailed 7-3 when their match was abandoned once Cal clinched the doubles point.
Augustus added, “For Stephane, that was her first opportunity at doubles in a while, so maybe that was just a little bit of nerves. But she really turned it on in the singles, and she didn't even lose a game. I have a feeling they will play much better tomorrow.”
Cal plays its next conference match on Saturday when it hosts the Utes at noon.
