No. 16 Cal Topped by No. 3 UCLA, 7-1

LOS ANGELES – UCLA scored four runs in first inning off of Cal right-hander Ryan Mason and went on to cruise to a 7-1 win over Cal in the second game of the three-game Pac-12 series Friday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The two teams will now play the rubber match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. after the Golden Bears (23-12, 10-7) had shut out the No. 3-ranked Bruins (27-8, 13-4), 2-0, Thursday night. All three games of the Cal-UCLA series have been shown on the Pac-12 Networks.

The Bears got their lone run in the top of the seventh inning when junior left fielder Mitchell Kranson had a one-out double to left center field, and then after Lucas Erceg's single advanced him the third base, Kranson scored on Chris Paul's pop up that went off the glove of Bruin second baseman Chatterton's glove.

Mason struggled early in the contest, giving up five runs in the first three innings. Freshman right-hander Erik Martinez came in and settled things down, going 3.2 innings with two hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts.

On Thursday, Erceg homered in the sixth inning and Nick Halamandaris later followed with a clutch RBI single to give David Esquer's squad its runs. Sophomore right-hander Daulton Jefferies (4-2) produced the key win, throwing 6.2 innings with seven hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Senior Dylan Nelson picked up his fifth save of the season, throwing the ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Besides the outstanding pitching of Jefferies and Nelson, senior Chris Muse-Fisher came in to get the final out in the seventh inning with a strikeout, and sophomore right-hander Alex Schick pitched the eighth with no hits and a strikeout.

The Bears' win over the No. 3 Bruins is thei third win of the year over a Top 10 ranked team, defeating then No. 8 Oregon twice to open Pac-12 play in mid-March.
