TUCSON, ARIZ. – The 16-ranked Golden Bears shut down the Pac-12's top offense as sophomore right-hander Daulton Jefferies stifled hard-hitting Arizona in a 3-1 Cal win Friday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. Jefferies (5-2) had his second consecutive scoreless outing, throwing 7.0 innings with eight hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts after throwing 6.2 shutout innings at No. 3-ranked UCLA the week before.

Daulton Jefferies was great tonight,” said Cal coach David Esquer, who saw his team improve to 24-14 overall and 11-8 in Pac-12 play. “He held down one of the best offensives we have faced. Pitching and defense was the key. There were great plays by Mitchell Kranson in the outfield and Robbie Tenerowicz and Preston Grand Pre in the infield that were big for us.”

The Bears scored their runs when senior first baseman Chris Paul scored on a Cody Hamlin wild pitch and Grand Pre drove in freshman catcher Brett Cumberland with a single to right field in the fourth inning. Cal added an insurance run in the ninth inning on junior designated hitter Nick Halamandaris' RBI double to left field that scored pinch runner Sean Peters.

Besides Jefferies masterful performance, sophomore Alex Schick had a perfect eighth inning and then senior closer Dylan Nelson earned his sixth save of the year giving up a hit and an unearned run in the ninth inning.

The Bears will look to capture game two of the series versus Arizona (24-15, 9-10) Saturday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field. Sunday contest is at 12 p.m.
