SEATTLE - California remained perfect in the Pac-12 as the No. 33 Golden Bears defeated 59th-ranked Washington, 4-2, indoors at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday. Junior Oskar Wikberg won in singles to clinch the overall victory, after earlier pairing with sophomore Andre Goransson to secure the doubles point.
Cal improved to 3-0 in the conference and 15-5 overall, while Washington fell to 10-8 (0-3 in the Pac-12).
The match was slated to take place outdoors at the Quillian Tennis Stadium and air on the Pac-12 Networks. But a steady rain necessitated the move inside and forced the cancellation of the TV broadcast.
"It was tricky today with the weather," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "The doubles point was moved indoors and that ended up being key for us today. We had a delay in the singles because the Pac-12 Networks wanted us to play outdoors. When it didn't clear up outside, they allowed us to move the singles indoors.
"Washington is always tough indoors, but we had some great performances today to help guide us to a 4-2 win."
With Cal leading 3-2, Wikberg beat Emmett Egger, 7-6(4), 6-4, at court-four singles to seal the Bears' victory.
Earlier, Goransson and Wikberg prevailed over Egger and Jeff Hawke, 6-4, on doubles court one to clinch doubles.
The Bears next play No. 51 Oregon on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Eugene, Oregon.
