STANFORD, Calif. - Two strong performances got the Cal men's water polo team off to a good start at the Kap7 NorCal Invitational as the Bears earned wins over San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara to advance to Sunday's semifinals at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center.

No. 3-ranked Cal (7-0), which is seeded No. 4 this weekend, will take on No. 1 UCLA at 10:50 a.m. on Sunday. No. 4-ranked and third-seeded Stanford will host No. 2 USC in the other semifinal and the winners will meet at 6:15 p.m.

Cal 15, San Jose State 1

Goals came early and often for the Bears as they left little room for San Jose State to stay in the match as Cal cruised to an opening-round win at Belardi Pool.

As they have in nearly every match so far this season, Cal's youngsters came out of the gate strong against the Spartans. Freshman Johnny Hooper scored two goals in the first period, fellow frosh Odysseas Masmanidis added one and junior Chandler Jarrels scored another to give the Bears a 4-0 lead after one period. Hooper added another goal and Colin Mulcahy scored one of his own to build a 6-1 lead by the midway point.

Several other Bears found their way onto the scoresheet in the third and fourth periods. Pedro Stellet and J.D. Ratchford each scored twice and Nicholas Carniglia, Hooper, Vassilis Tzavaras, Timothy Simenc and Andrew Schnugg all added a goal of their own to provide the final margin of victory.

While Cal was finding the net with good frequency, the Bears' goalies were busy making sure San Jose State couldn't do the same. Lazar Andric got the start, played one period and made one save and junior Peter O'Laughlin took it from there, stopping eight shots over the final three periods in a strong performance.

Cal 12, UC Santa Barbara 5

Another good start gave the Bears an early advantage and they went on to beat the Gauchos for the second time this season in a game that finished with the same final score as the teams' first meeting in San Diego.

Cal spread the offensive duties around to begin their second match of the day. Farrel South got the Bears on the board, Hooper doubled the lead, Jarrels added another and Ratchford scored one more to make it 4-1 Cal at the end of one period. That lead grew in the second quarter, with goals from Jarrels, Luca Cupido, Hooper and Tzavaras helping to make it 8-2 at halftime.

UC Santa Barbara countered with three more goals of its own but the Bears still managed to score one more as goals by Pedro Stellet, Hooper, Ratchford and Odysseas Masmanidis rounded out the scoring.
