BERKELEY – Thursday's match looked like it would be California's fifth overtime thriller of the season.
Unfortunately, plans for extended play halted after No. 17 UCLA (7-3-1, 3-1-0 Pac 12) snuck in its fourth score with two seconds remaining in regulation to move ahead 4-3 for the win and to end the Golden Bears' untapped home record for the season.
Cal (4-5-2, 0-3-1) recovered from a 2-1 deficit in the 51' after Jose Carerra-Garcia netted a penalty kick for the equalizer. The Bears scored again on an equalizer from
Joshua Morton in the 80' to level things at 3-3, looking to push things into overtime.
"It was a really exciting and incredible game for the fans and for the players," said head coach
Kevin Grimes. "It was one of those days where you wish you were scoring a goal with two seconds left instead of giving one up. But, at the end of the day I'm proud of our players efforts and proud that they came back multiple times. They had a fighting spirit all the way to the end.
"Give UCLA credit - they found a way to pounce on a loose ball in the box and get the game winner. But I'm proud of our guys and this is something they can build on."
However, a UCLA corner kick with less than 10 seconds remaining set up the Bruins' Blayne Martinez to knock one in right next to the net with 89:58 on the clock.
The Bears were unable to slow the Bruins' offensive attack, allowing three other players to score throughout the game.
Cal opened scoring in its first home Pac-12 contest in the 26' with a goal from senior
Trevor Haberkorn, assisted by
Paul Salcedo-Borrego, but momentum would swing in the favor of their SoCal rivals.
The Bears host another in-state conference foe on Sunday when they face the Aztecs of San Diego State scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
