Cal Keeps Home Mojo Going With 2OT Win Over Oregon

Kunaszyk Interception In Second Extra Period Clinches 52-49 Victory

BERKELEY – The Cal football team is making a habit of saving its biggest plays for late nights in Berkeley, and with a second overtime nearly taking Friday's game against Oregon into Saturday morning, one massive defensive play made all the difference for a group of Bears that has no problem staying up past its bedtime to come away with a win.

An interception by linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk provided the game-clinching play and the Cal football team claimed its fifth-straight home win and eighth in its last nine games at Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium as the Bears defeated the Ducks 52-49 in double overtime.

A potent rushing attack helped lead the way for Cal (4-3, 2-2 Pac-12) offensively with Tre Watson rushing 28 times for a career-high 154 yards while also catching five passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Khalfani Muhammad added 148 yards on the ground and Davis Webb tossed five touchdowns and completed 42 of 61 passes for 325 yards.

Cal rushed for 311 yards as a team and Friday's game marked the first time since 2004 that the Bears ran for over 300 yards in back to back games. That led to a 636-450 advantage for Cal in total offense and the Bears and Ducks set an FBS record with 203 combined offensive plays.

Cal took its chances on defense first in the extra period, but on the second play of Oregon's series, Herbert connected with Jalen Brown for a 20-yard touchdown to give the Ducks a 49-42 lead. That left the Bears in need of a touchdown and Webb responded as Cal's signal-caller scored on a 1-yard read option run. Matt Anderson's PAT tied the score and kept the game going.

The Bears took their offensive turn first in the second overtime but penalties derailed Cal's search for the end zone. After getting inside the 5-yard line, a trio of infractions pushed the Bears back and they had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Anderson. Those three points were enough though, because on Oregon's second offensive play, Kunaszyk batted Justin Herbert's pass into the air and eventually came down with it to give the Bears their first win over the Ducks since 2008.

"In the back of my head, I just remembered coach saying 'boundary hash, boundary hash,'" Kunaszyk said. "Lo and behold, I went to the boundary hash, found myself with the ball and made the play."

After a quick score by Oregon tied the score with just over three minutes left, Cal launched one last effort at a win in regulation. Taking the ball on the 18, the Bears marched right down the field, mixing the pass and the run to reach the Ducks' 24-yard line with four seconds left. Anderson's 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left, taking Cal into overtime for the second game in a row.

Oregon (2-5, 0-4) took its first lead of the game just after the fourth quarter began. A 6-yard touchdown pass from Herbert to Charles Nelson capped a stretch of 21 unanswered points and gave the Ducks a 35-34 advantage with 13:43 to play.

Cal wasn't going away quietly. The Bears launched an 11-play, 77-yard drive that culminated in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Webb to Watson. A pass from Webb to J.D. Hinnant gave Cal the 2-point conversion and the Bears took a 42-35 lead with 9:50 left.

Oregon's next drive stalled, and a Ducks punt gave Cal the ball back on its own 6-yard line with 5:20 remaining. The Bears went 3 and out though and, after a kick catch interference call on Cal on the punt, Oregon regained possession on its own 44 with 3:51 left. It took the Ducks three plays and 36 seconds to even the score, and a 42-yard pass from Herbert to Nelson followed by a point-after left the two teams tied at 42 with 3:15 to play.

After Cal extended its lead to 19 with a field goal on the first possession of the third quarter, Oregon closed with 14 straight points to draw closer. A 12-yard pass up the seam from Herbert to Johnny Mundt left the Ducks down 34-28 with another drive in progress as the quarter ended.

A dominant first quarter for the Bears gave way to more in the way of two-way offense in the second and Cal took a 31-14 lead into intermission. The Bears ruled the period with stout defense and a few opportunistic plays on offense, and after a 10-yard touchdown pass from Webb to Demetris Robertson and a 5-yard play-action score from Webb to Hudson, Cal took an early 14-0 lead after a quarter. Cal rushed for 117 yards in the first quarter, 67 of which came from Muhammad on one scoring drive. The Bears held a 320-191 edge in total offense by halftime and led 31-14 heading to the locker room.

"I'm proud of our guys for getting a turnover at the end of the game," Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said. "That's two (home) games in a row our defense has been on the field at the end of the game, had an opportunity to win a game for us and they found a way to get it done. Credit those guys. They kept playing and believing and fighting. It was a crazy ballgame. Over 200 plays and I think there was one turnover, which was the last play of the game. Two teams that played really hard."

Cal hits the road for another weekday game next week when it travels to Los Angeles to face USC on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will again be televised by ESPN. The Bears return to California Memorial Stadium on Nov. 5 to host Washington. Game time has not yet been announced.
