BERKELEY – Despite edging their opponents on shots and corners, the Golden Bears dropped their final Pac-12 road game on Sunday in San Diego, Calif.
California (5-7-2, 1-5-1 Pac-12) finished on the wrong side of a 1-0 match against San Diego State (8-3-4, 3-2-2) as the Aztecs picked up a series win.
Despite finishing with 15 shots, three on goal and nine corners, the Bears could not recover from an early score by the Aztecs Travis Nicklaw in the sixth minute of play. By comparison, SDSU posted 14 shots, five on goal and six corners.
The Bears sought a win after falling 1-0 in Berkeley a week ago to the Aztecs in overtime.
Cal recorded its first league win Thursday in Los Angeles in a rematch against No. 24 UCLA (2-1) before heading to San Diego.
The Golden Bears close the regular season hosting three Pac-12 matches. They will face Washington on Oct. 27 and Oregon State on Oct. 30 to close the series with each of their northern rivals. Cal fell to 2-1 to the Huskies, then ranked 16th, in Seattle. That loss came after a 2-2 draw with the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore.
