Cal Drops Overtime Battle to No. 16 Washington

BERKELEYCalifornia was stung by another close loss in league play on Thursday.

The Golden Bears (5-8-2, 1-6-1 Pac-12) fell 2-1 in an overtime match against Pac-12-opponent No. 16 Washington (11-4-0, 5-2-0) in the 99' of action, just skirting a second overtime period.

Freshman Simon Lekressner earned his first goal of the season on an equalizer in the 72', assisted by Aravind Sivakumar and Christian Thierjung, to tie things at 1-1. However, despite outshooting the Huskies 18-13, the Bears were bested on a hard-fought goal by Washington's David Coly with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Cal drops the season series to Washington after a 2-1 loss in Seattle on Oct. 9,

"This is an incredible team that plays the beautiful game as good as any team we've had in my 17 years," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "The recent results defy all human logic. Simply put, there is no explanation of why we are in the position we are in. The players should be commended for continuous mental strength and courage despite the difficult results. We'll be back, don't you worry."

After a scoreless first half, the Huskies jumped on the boards with a goal in the 49' by Kyle Coffee against sophomore Jonathan Klinsmann, who recorded three saves on the night.

The Bears are back in action Sunday in a rematch against Oregon State at Goldman Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
