Alftin Hits For Career High In Loss At No. 15 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – Junior Christine Alftin had a career-high 22 kills and hit for a .450 percentage but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 15 UCLA 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17 on Sunday.

Freshman Bailee Huizenga added 10 kills for the Bears (8-12, 2-8 Pac-12), who had a 23-22 lead in the first set but couldn't close it out. Cal and UCLA were tied 22-22 in the second set before the Bears scored the last three to even the match.

Redshirt freshman Savannah Rennie saw the first extensive playing time of her career and finished with six kills and two blocks in just over two sets. Redshirt sophomore Ashten Smith-Gooden added six kills and three blocks and freshman Maddie Haynes had five kills in two sets.

Cal fell behind 16-12 in the first set before coming back to take an 18-17 lead. The Bears still led 22-20 but UCLA tied it at 22-22. After Alftin came up with a kill to put Cal in front once again, the Bruins scored two in a row to reach set point. Alftin put down another kill to once again tie it at 24-24, but UCLA scored the final two points of the set.

Cal led by as much as 18-12 in the second set but the Bruins stormed back to tie it at 22-22. But a service error by UCLA and kills by Rennie and Alftin helped the Bears knot the match at one set apiece.

After the Bruins led comfortably throughout the third set, Cal kept it close for much of the fourth. Haynes and sophomore Belen Castillo came up with a block to pull the Bears within 15-14, but UCLA then scored seven of the next nine points to take control.

Cal returns to action Friday at Haas Pavilion against No. 7 Washington at 8 p.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
