DAVIS, Calif. – In their final road game of the regular season, the Golden Bears suffered a setback with a 2-0 shutout loss to UC Davis in Aggie territory Friday afternoon. Cal is now 1-4 in America East action and 4-11 this season.
Â
The Bears outshot the Aggies, 21-16, but failed to capitalize on their chances with only six shots on goal. Sophomore
Melina Moore, who leads Cal in goals this season, led with two shots on frame, and four other Bears nearly found the back of the cage.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Danielle Mentink made her first career start in goal, notching five saves in 55:34 minutes of action while allowing two goals. Her backfield also chipped in with a pair of defensive saves by senior
Michaela Swensen and freshman
Femke Delissen.
Â
Mentink's Davis counterpart, goalie Beth Lee, saved all six Cal shots on goal in her complete-game shutout performance, while Kayla Wigney scored both goals for the Aggies.
Â
Wigney scored first at 16:35 after exploiting a turnover on the sideline before tallying her second goal less than five minutes later. Agustina Singh sent one toward the Golden Bear goal, which Mentink saved, but Wigney grabbed the rebound and punched it in to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead at 20:44.
Â
Cal outscored Davis 10-9 in the first half with a 6-4 lead in penalty corners. The Bears limited the Aggies to seven shots while turning in 11 of their own in the second half, but a scoreless final 35 minutes left the game locked at 2-0.
