SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Senior middle blocker
Jenelle Jordan had 10 kills and four blocks but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 19 Utah 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 on Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
Junior
Christine Alftin added nine kills and nine digs and freshman
Maddie Haynes had eight kills for the Bears (9-14, 3-10 Pac-12). Senior libero
Maddy Kerr led Cal's defensive effort with 11 digs.
Each set was close until near the end, and each time the Utes were able to string together a run of points to close it out. In the first set, a block by Jordan pulled the Bears to within 18-17 but Utah then scored five in a row to take command. Cal fell behind 15-8 in the second set but stormed back to trim the deficit to 20-19. Once again, the Utes were able to run off a few points in a row to extend back to a 23-19 advantage and finish it off.
The Bears found themselves behind by the same 20-19 score in the third set after Utah raced out to a 9-2 lead. But the third set followed the same script as the second, with the Utes proceeding to score three in a row and going on to close out the match.
Senior setter
Alyssa Jensen had 36 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore
Amanda Kirtley also had 10 digs.
The Bears are back in action Sunday at Colorado at 11 a.m. PT. The match will be televised by Pac-12 Bay Area.
