Bears Knock Off 20th-Ranked Sooners

LAS VEGAS – Facing its first AP Top 25 opponent of the season, the Cal women's basketball team downed No. 20 Oklahoma, 82-74, on Tuesday night at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 11-0 on the season and now hold sole possession of the third-longest winning streak in program history.

Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe paced the Bears with 32 points and tied her career high with 15 rebounds as the Bears earned their first win of the season against a ranked foe and the fourth in the last two seasons. It was the second 30-point effort of the season for Angiwe, who scored a school-record 50 points on December 8 against Sacramento State, and her seventh double-double of the year. The 2016 USBWA National Freshman of the Year now has 21 double-doubles in 42 career games, the most by any active underclassman in the country.

Senior Courtney Range, who scored a season-high 28 points on Monday against Southern Miss, chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Range needs just four points to reach the 1,000-point threshold. Freshman Jaelyn Brown added 11 points and four assists in 20 minutes off the bench.

Oklahoma took a 4-0 lead to open the game, before Cal responded to with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. The Bears' relentless defense forced the Sooners– who entered the contest averaging 15.0 turnovers per game – to 18 turnovers in the first half and held Oklahoma scoreless for a stretch of 4:35 early in the first quarter. Anigwe was active on the glass in the opening period, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots – one shy of her career best – in the first half.

Cal took an 18-point lead into halftime, holding the Sooners to a season-low 20 points in the first half and just seven points in the second quarter, the fewest Oklahoma had scored in any quarter all season.

However Oklahoma's offense came alive in the second half, shooting 40.5 percent from the floor compared to 29 percent in the first half. The Bears led by 25 points early in the fourth quarter, but a frantic fourth-quarter comeback saw the Sooners draw within three with 2:57 left to play.

Junior forward Penina Davidson came up with a pivotal play down the stretch, finishing the put-back off an Anigwe miss to give Cal a 78-70 lead with 59 seconds left. Cal connected on four of six free throw attempts in the final minute to secure the Bears' first win of the season against a Top-25 foe.

Cal wraps up its non-conference schedule tomorrow, taking on Arkansas State at 9:15 p.m. at the South Point Arena. The Lady Wolves (2-9, 0-0 Sun Belt) are coming off an 83-78 loss to Northern Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday's game is Cal's final contest before opening Pac-12 play on Dec. 29 at Arizona (6 p.m. PT).
