Ben An tied for 11th after shooting a final-round 68 Sunday.
RIO DE JANEIRO – Golden Bear Ben An, competing for South Korea, shot a 3-under-par 68 in the final round of the Olympic golf tournament to finish in a tie for 11th place, highlighting Cal's Sunday results at the 2016 Games.
Â
An completed four days of play with a 6-under-par total at the Olympic Golf Course, matching scores by Patrick Reed (USA), Bernd Wiesberger (Austria) and David Lingmerth (Sweden). An posted a pair of eagles on Sunday, including on the par-5 18th hole.
Â
"I didn't get a medal this week, but I'm proud to be an Olympian and represent my country. It was a special week," An tweeted after his round.
Â
An, who played for the Bears from 2010-11, joins both his parents as Olympians. At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, his mother won a silver medal in women's doubles and a bronze in women's singles for China, while his father took home a bronze medal in men's doubles for South Korea.
Â
Elsewhere around Rio for the Bears on Sunday,
Luca Cupido, who will be a junior at Cal in the fall, helped the United States men's water polo team defeat Italy, 10-7, in group play. Cupido's second-quarter goal tied the score at 4-4. He added a steal and two blocked shots in the game. Cal alum
John Mann started for Team USA, but did not score.
Â
In women's volleyball, alum
Carli Lloyd and the United States completed pool play with a perfect 5-0 record after downing China, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19). Lloyd saw action in the first set and contributed one dig and one assist. Team USA next plays Tuesday night in the quarterfinals.
Â
"We knew China would be a tough competitor. They always are and they don't go away," Lloyd said after the match. "So you can get them backed up a bit, then they just come at you full throttle. I feel we did a really good job of just staying in it and trusting in what we do. It was a great team effort."
Â
Lloyd, the 2010 NCAA Player of the Year, added she takes much of what she learned in Berkeley with her onto the court at the international level.
Â
"Being at Cal and being in that environment, I felt like I was part of a family," Lloyd said. "That environment we created in Berkeley those four years is something that will always be with me. And I use that as an example when I go other places because those four years were phenomenal. We had a great four-year run there, and a large part was because of the environment we created."
Â
Overall, Cal has 41 athletes competing at the Olympics in Rio and they have earned 20 medals to date, with 19 coming in swimming and one in men's rowing.
