Late Goal Lifts Cal Over SDSU, 1-0

SAN DIEGO - In a scoreless deadlock, junior Shinya Kadono nailed the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to propel California over San Diego State, 1-0, and keep the Bears underfeated in their first two Pac-12 contests.

Cal (7-2, 2-0 Pac-12), now on a six-game win streak, pressured the Aztecs early, recording five first-half shots, and limiting SDSU (4-6, 0-2) to three shots in the opening period. SDSU countered in the second half to finish with eight total shots, giving up four more to the Bears.

Those four would be enough to pull Cal ahead just before the 90th minute concluded to send things into overtime. Kadono, who leads the team with five goals, drilled in a loose ball off the post from Ugo Rebechinni to solidify the win, marking his second game-winner this season.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender tallied four saves on the day and collected his fourth shutout to close the first weekend of conference play with a 6-2 record.

The Bears return to Berkeley on Oct. 8 to host the Bay Area Derby against reigning conference champions No. 11 Stanford at 3 p.m. (PT) at Edwards Stadium. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
