BERKELEY – A 24th-ranked California could not find its footing on Sunday as they fell to eighth-ranked Stanford in the Bay Area Derby, 3-0. It was the Golden Bears first Pac-12 loss and ended a six-game win streak.
Â
The Cardinal's poised passing outmaneuvered the tenacious defense of the Bears, who allowed a pair of first half goals that proved difficult to overcome. Cal gave up its first goal in three games in minute four of play on a header from Stanford's Corey Baird.
Â
The Cardinal then widened the margin in the 14th minute with another score headed in by Tomas Hilliard-Arce on a corner kick.
Â
The Bears stayed aggressive late in the game posting eight shots in the second period, but could not seal the deal.
Â
Stanford tacked on another goal in the 66th minute from Amir Bashti to provide the final margin.
Â
Drake Callender tacked on five saves, but was credited with his third loss of the season.
Â
Cal remains at home for its next pair of conference battles hosting Oregon State on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. (PT) and No. 22 Washington on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m.
