BERKELEY – A second-half surge moved California passed Oregon State in a 2-0 victory on Thursday to mark the Golden Bears fifth shutout of the season and their third in Pac-12 play.
Sam Ebstein knocked in his second goal of the season in the 59th minute to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead and keep the Beavers (4-8-0, 1-3-0) at bay. He was assisted by
Jose Carrera-Garcia, whose six assists headed into Thursday tied for 16th in the nation.
"It was a tough game and very physical," Ebstein said. "The second half we needed to be attack minded, get in the box and put some goals away. That's all I was thinking."
OSU couldn't connect on the equalizer in the 74th minute, and the Bears counterattacked with a breakaway score from
Simon Lekressner, also assisted by Carrera-Garcia.
The Beavers swarmed the Bears net early in the opening half with a trio of shots on goal but could not get passed
Drake Callender who recorded his fifth shutout performance with five saves and moved his record to 7-3.
Cal returns to the pitch to close a three-game home stretch on Sunday when it hosts No. 19 Washington (9-3-0, 2-1-0). The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network and is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
