BERKELEY – California pulled through a physical battle to upend 19th-ranked Washington in a 2-1 thriller to close a perfect week on the pitch after downing Oregon State 2-0 on Thursday. Sunday's shootout marked the Golden Bears (8-3-0, 3-1-0 Pac-12) first win over a ranked opponent this season.

Senior captain
Jose Carrera-Garcia sealed the victory with a game-winner in the 77th minute on a free kick that shot over the Huskies' wall hit the crossbar and finally bounced into the net. The Bears earned the free kick on a breakaway from
Simon Lekressner, who was fouled just outside the box.

The Bears nabbed their first win against the Huskies (9-4-1, 2-2-0) since 2015 after losing both matches last season.
"It was a good weekend for sure. We want to maintain a level of improvement throughout the season and we saw that this weekend,
 said head coach
Kevin Grimes.  "Our mindset right now is looking forward to our first training session next week to get ourselves prepared for our trip."

Cal opened scoring in the first half on a well-timed header from
Shinya Kadono in the 11th minute to put the Bears in front 1-0. Kadono's sixth goal of the season was set up by senior captain Ugo Rebechinni for the assist.

The Huskies equalized in the 16th minute with a score from Luke Hauswirth and the teams headed into the break after a gritty opening half knotted at 1-1.

Drake Callender continues to lead the Pac-12 in saves and prevented four critical attempts to bring his record to 8-3 on the season.

California heads north this week to pay both Oregon State and Washington a visit. On Thursday the Bears faceoff with the Beavers at 3 p.m. (PT) while Sunday's rematch with the Huskies is slated for 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with live stats available on CalBears.com.
