BERKELEY – The Cal women's soccer team continued its defensive dominance, posting its fourth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 win over Oregon State (4-8-3, 1-5-1 Pac-12) on Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Freshman midfielder Daisy Cleverley scored the game winner for the Golden Bears (12-2-1, 5-1-1 Pac-12) in the 34th minute and Cal's backline proved up to the task once again, posting its ninth shutout of the year.
With the win, the Bears improve to 7-1-1 this season at Edwards Stadium and have won their last four games, all via shutout. This is Cal's longest shutout streak of the year and the team's longest in conference play since the 2005 season. Cal has posted a shutout in seven of its last nine outings and ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals against average (0.39 GAA). With today's clean sheet, Cal senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd moves into a tie for third in Pac-12 women's soccer history with 35 career shutouts.
Thursday's match started slowly for the Bears, conceding a free kick deep in their defensive half in the opening minutes of the game. An Oregon State attacker got on the end of the service but the apparent goal was called back for offside.
But the Bears soon found their rhythm in the game, controlling possession in the midfield while searching for the finishing touch in the attacking third. After attempts on target from Luca Deza and Miranda Nild, the Bears finally broke through in the 34th minute. Off a free kick from just outside the box, redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald played a free kick from just outside the box into the area that found an on-rushing Cleverley. The New Zealand international got a head on it, beating Oregon State goalkeeper Bella Geist for her first career goal. Cleverley becomes the 12th different player to score for the Golden Bears this season, while Fitzgerald picked up her second assist of the year.
The Bears nearly added to their lead in the closing seconds of the half, as freshman midfielder Caroline Clark ripped a shot off the crossbar from outside the box. Cal outshot Oregon State, 8-3, in the first half, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
The second half saw the Bears continuing to create opportunities in the attack, nearly adding to their advantage in the 47th minute when Haley Lukas took a shot from distance that just narrowly missed the upper 90. Fitzgerald and Cleverley nearly combined for another goal in the 60th minute, but Cleverley's volley from six yards out was saved by Geist. Fitzgerald found sophomore striker Kayla Fong with another pin-point service later in the half, but the play was broken up by the Beavers' defense.
Geist made eight saves on the afternoon for Oregon State while Boyd made four stops in the win, extending her current shutout streak to 376 minutes.
The Beavers threw numbers into the attack in the late stages of the match, but the Bears remained organized and withstood the pressure, earning their fourth consecutive win in the series with Oregon State.
Cal will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Oregon (7-7-0, 1-5-0 Pac-12) at 11 a.m. PT in the Bears' final home game of the regular season. The five members of Cal's senior class – Guro Bergsvand, Emily Boyd, Indigo Gibson, Haley Lukas, and Heather Walleigh – will be recognized prior to Sunday's match for Senior Day. Cal's seniors have an overall record of 52-18-9 during their time in Berkeley, leading the team to NCAA appearances and academic honors each of the last three completed seasons.
