Undermanned Bears Fall To Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Playing once again without two starters, the Cal volleyball team couldn't keep up with Arizona on Friday night and fell 25-16, 25-15, 25-13 at the McKale Center.

Starting outside hitter Christine Alftin and starting setter Mackenzie Albrecht each missed her second straight match because of injuries. Alftin and Albrecht are Cal's co-captains.

Redshirt junior Ashten Smith-Gooden led the Bears (12-10, 3-8 Pac-12) with nine kills at a .286 hitting percentage while junior Carmen Annevelink added five kills. Sophomore Emma Smith had eight digs.

Freshman Isabel Potter started at setter for the Bears and fellow freshman setter Jordyn Schuette made her college debut, seeing time in two sets. Junior Amanda Kirtley made her first career start at libero.

The Bears will be back in action Sunday when they visit Arizona State at 11 a.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
