TEMPE, Ariz. – The sign on the building said the Cal volleyball team played at Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday. But for freshman middle blocker
Preslie Anderson, it may as well have been Haas Pavilion.
Anderson hails from Chandler, Arizona, about 15 miles away from Arizona State University. With a large contingent of family and friends in the stands, Anderson helped the Bears register a 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 25-11 victory.
"The feeling was unreal," said Anderson, who set a career-high with 11 kills and hit for a .421 percentage. "It felt like we were playing at Haas. It was so exciting to see everyone I haven't seen in awhile, and also the team played so well today."
Indeed, the Bears hit for a .28Tpercentage – their highest in a Pac-12 match this season. They also held the Sun Devils to a .053 clip – the lowest by a conference opponent this year.
The win followed what the Bears admitted was their worst performance of the season – a three-set loss at Arizona on Friday.
"I think it says more about Friday than it does about today," Cal coach
Matt McShane said. "One of the things we said after Friday's match is we had played 22 matches and we had only played like that once. I said to the team, 'I'll take that once out of 22. Those are good odds."
Playing their third straight match without co-captain
Christine Alftin, the Bears (13-10, 4-8 Pac-12) got contributions from several players for the win. Freshman
Mima Mirkovic led Cal with 13 kills and 19 digs while junior
Carmen Annevelink added 11 kills. Senior
Antzela Dempi had eight kills and five blocks while senior middle blocker
Caihla Petiprin registered five blocks as well. Sophhomore
Emma Smith had 18 digs.
"We had a discussion about generating enthusiasm on the court," McShane said. "Today, there were a number of people who did that. When (Alftin) is on the court, she provides a lot of enthusiasm. When you're cheering from the bench, it's not the same. We needed some other people to do it."
After winning the first set easily, the Bears fell behind 14-8 in the second set only to trim the deficit to 16-15. ASU eventually got to set point at 24-20, and Cal scored back-to-back points before finally succumbing and the match was even at one set apiece.
The Bears opened up a 9-4 lead to begin the third set only to see the Sun Devils score six in a row to go in front. Cal still clung to a 20-19 lead before scoring four of the next five to reach set point. After ASU scored a couple points, Mirkovic put down a kill to close out the set.
The fourth set was never close. The Bears scored the first six points and extended the advantage to 15-5 before cruising to the victory.
"To get my career-high in front of my home crowd was amazing," Anderson said. "Everyone on the team was so supportive of me, and I could feel the energy my family and friends were bringing. The bench helped a lot with that, too."
The road victory was Cal's first in Pac-12 play since winning at Utah on Oct. 18, 2015. The Bears also swept both matches against a conference opponent for the first time since 2013 and now have their most Pac-12 wins since that year as well.
"There's another wall that we've broken down," McShane said. "The freshmen and sophomores on this team are going to look back two or three years from now and talk about this team. This team is creating a new legacy for what happens in the future. We will talk about when we started doing this and how difficult it was. It's a big deal."
Cal returns home next week to face the Oregon schools, beginning with No. 15 Oregon on Friday at 7 p.m.
