BERKELEY – The Cal men's swimming team makes its 2017-18 home debut on Friday when it hosts Stanford in the schools' annual Triple Distance Meet at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Triple Distance format, which started as a modified practice between the two schools, features individual swimmers competing in three different distances of one event. In most events, swimmers compete at distances of 50, 100 and 200 yards while distance freestylers will compete in the 200, 500 and 1,000 while IMers will also contest the 400.

Cal returns to action for the first time since seven undergrads helped Team Pac-12 win the USA College Challenge against a Team USA squad that featured four Cal professionals. The Bears also have two dual meets under their belts with a 158.5-100.5 win at Pacific and a 188.5-111.5 win at Utah coming just one day apart. Cal's season started at the King of the Pool, hosted by Cal Poly, and featured Matthew Josa emerging with a narrow victory thanks to his combined time in five 100-yard races.

LAST YEAR
Cal claimed four overall event wins and took both relays at the 2016 Triple Distance Meet hosted by Stanford. Ryan Murphy (backstroke), Hunter Cobleigh (breaststroke), Michael Jensen (sprint free) and Andrew Seliskar (IM) won their combined events. The Bears also earned wins in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

PAC-12 EDGES TEAM USA
A group of seven Cal swimmers – Matthew Josa, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch, Andrew Seliskar, Michael Jensen, Zheng Wen Quah and Sean Grieshop – helped a Pac-12 team coached on the men's side by David Durden earn a 326.5-286.5 win over Team USA in the two-day USA College Challenge hosted by USC. While the collegiate team earned the overall victory, Cal pro star and Olympic gold medalist Tom Shields was a force for Team USA as he earned wins in the 100 and 200 free as well as the 100 and 200 fly.

DUAL ACTION
Two dual meets in two days in two different time zones led to two Cal wins with a 158.-100.5 victory at Pacific and a 188.5-111.5 results at Utah. In Stockton, five Bears – Ken Takahashi, Jack Xie, Andy Song, Matt Whittle and Ryan Kao – won two events apiece to lead a day in which Cal swimmers claimed 11 individual event victories. The next day, Cal's contingent in Utah claimed 12 events, including both relays, to take another good step forward in the Bears' fall training program.

NEXT UP
Cal's divers will get back to work from Nov. 17 to 19 when they head to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Lumberjack Diving Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona.
