Biography

Cal Success:

  • Continued to perform as one of the nation's most versatile swimmers as a junior in 2017-18, earning All-America honors in the 200 breast, 400 IM, 200 IM, 400 free relay and 800 free relay.
  • Scored the most individual points of any Pac-12 swimmer at the 2018 NCAA Championships with 47.
  • Made three "A" finals at NCAAs for the third year in a row, placing second in the 200 breast, third in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200 IM.
  • Teamed with Justin Lynch, Ryan Hoffer and Michael Jensen to set the Cal school record in the 400 free relay - 2:46.54 - at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
  • Earned Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second time with a standout performance at the 2018 conference championships. Won two individual titles - 400 IM and 200 breast - in P12 Champs record time and two relay titles.
  • Had another huge season as a sophomore in 2016-17, winning three individual titles at the Pac-12 Championships and making three "A" finals at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
  • Made a major mark at the 2017 NCAA Championships by placing second in the 400 IM and sixth in both the 200 IM and 200 fly. His time of 3:36.18 in the 400 IM was second all-time in Cal history behind only Josh Prenot's NCAA-championship time of 3:35.82.
  • Also swam on Cal's 400 free and 800 free relays at the 2017 NCAA Championships and helped the Bears win Pac-12 titles in the 800 free and 400 medley relays.
  • Tied with Long Gutierrez for the team's top time in the 200 free (1:33.31) during the 2016-17 season.
  • Enjoyed an incredible freshman season in 2015-16, earning Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Pac-12 Championships after winning three individual (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 butterfly) and three relays (400 free, 800 free, 400 medley) at the conference championships. Went on to earn Pac-12 Newcomer/Freshman of the Year honors in a vote of conference coaches.
  • Followed that showing up with an equally impressive performance at the 2016 NCAA Championships, reaching the A final in all three individual events he contested and placing third in the 200 fly with a time of 1:39.95 that was only three-tenths off Tom Shields' school record.
  • Was a consistent and versatile performer throughout his entire freshman season, posting Cal's top time in the 200 fly and battling with senior Josh Prenot for top honors in both IM events.

High School/Club/National Success: 

  • Named to the 2015-16 USA National Team thanks to his ranking in the top six in the United States in both the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley. Has been a national team member since 2013.
  • Attended Thomas Jefferson High School in McLean, Va. where he set the United States public high school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 53.24 seconds. Won the Virginia state high school championship in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Also won state titles in the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle in 2014.
  • Also swam for the Nation's Capital Swim Club and coach John Flanagan where he ascended to 19th in the FINA world rankings in the 200-meter butterfly in 2013 and 2014.
  • FINA 2013 World Junior Champion and junior world record holder in the 200-meter butterfly.
  • Gold medalist in the 200-meter butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM at 2014 Junior Pan Pacs.
  • Gold medalist in the 400-yard individual medley and placed second in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly at the 2013 AT&T Winter Nationals.
  • Won the 200-meter butterfly and took bronze in the 800 free relay (prelims) at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championship.
  • USA Swimming Junior National champion in the 200-meter IM (2012, 2013).
  • 15-16 year old national age group record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley and 200-meter long course IM.
  • Three-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
