Bears Maintain Lead At Georgia Fall Invitational
ATHENS, Ga. - Two more relay wins and a victory for
Matthew Josa in the 100-yard butterfly served as the highlights as day two of the Georgia Fall Invitational ended with the Cal men's swimming team atop the team standings for the second-straight day at the University of Georgia.
One day after sweeping the relays to move into the team lead, Cal kept that momentum going with more relay success on Saturday. that started with the 200 medley relay as the team of
Daniel Carr,
Connor Hoppe,
Justin Lynch and
Ryan Hoffer swam to a time of 1:23.44 that narrowly edged another quartet of Bears for the victory.
Cal placed three swimmers in the A final of the 400 IM and
Mike Thomas,
Andrew Seliskar and
Sean Grieshop finished in spots four, five and six to add to the Bears' team total. That depth showed through again in the 100 fly with four more swimmers entered in the A final. Josa emerged the victor from that group, stopping the clock in 45.28 to record his NCAA A qualifying time and set the second fastest mark in the nation this season.Â
Hoppe led a trio of Bears to the wall in the 100 breast A final, placing second in a time of 52.84.
Carson Sand and
Matt Whittle touched in fourth and fifth, respectively. Carr took his turn next in the 100 back and the freshman from Colorado recorded his first collegiate invitational victory with a time of 45.96 that ranks sixth in the nation this season. Josa also made the A final and placed sixth.
The Bears ended the night just like they started it, swimming to a win in the 800 free relay. Thomas put the Bears in the lead with a first 200 split of 1:34.52, Seliskar added to the lead,
Zheng Wen Quah maintained the advantage and
Michael Jensen came home in 1:33.78 to give the Bears a time of 6:16.08 that ranks second in the nation.
Entering the final day of competition, Cal leads the team competition with 670 points. Michigan ranks second with 639 and Georgia is third with 479. Sunday afternoon's final session will include the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
