INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Jena Fritts scored a career-high six goals, while
Elizabeth Pellechi added four tallies herself, tying a personal best, and the California women's lacrosse team defeated Butler, 19-7, Friday afternoon on the Butler campus to earn their first win of the season. Cal improved to 1-2 on the year.
The six goals by Fritts tie for second-best in school single-game history. She also recorded an assist, giving her seven points on the day, while Pellechi's two helpers gave her a point total of six.
"We focused a lot on the draw this week and that definitely was a difference maker," head coach
Brooke Eubanks said. "Jena stepped up a lot today. We have a balanced attack and everyone is a part of that. Our goal is to make our teammates look good, and any player can step up any day."
Cal took control of the game early, scoring the first seven goals. Fritts notched her first tally within the first two minutes, followed by back-to-back goals from Pellechi. After goals by
Eliza Christman and
Caroline Schlegel, Pellechi added her third goal to give Cal a 7-0 lead at the 21 minute mark.
The Bears continued to dominate the first half, taking a 15-3 lead into halftime.
Parker Garrett notched a hat trick, while Christman scored two goals.
Fritts is now Cal's season point leader with 11. Pellechi is second with 10.
The Bears try to make it two in a row when they head to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 9 am PT.
