Bears Down Ducks

EUGENE,  Ore. -  Cal kicked off the final weekend of the regular season in emphatic fashion, snapping its four-game losing streak with a 55-49 win over Oregon on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena. Oregon tied the game 49-49 with 3:35 left in the game, but the Bears defense held the Ducks scoreless the rest of the way. Freshman guard Mi'Cole Cayton drained a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds left in the game to give the Bears a five-point lead, and avenge Cal's defeat to Oregon on January 8, as the Ducks hit a game-winning three at the buzzer. The win snaps the Golden Bears' four-game road losing streak and gives Cal (18-11, 6-11 Pac-12) ten wins in its last 11 trips to Eugene. Oregon (18-11, 8-9 Pac-12) has now dropped back-to-back games following a three-game winning streak.

Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe finished three blocks shy of a triple-double, leading the Bears with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. The seven blocks matched Anigwe's career high as the Phoenix-product notched her 14th double-double of the season.

Classmate Asha Thomas added 15 points for the Bears, going 5-10 from beyond the arc. The  5'4" point guard added a season-high seven rebounds and two assists as the Bears went 7-18 from three-point range as a team.

Cal's freshman trio of Cayton, Jaelyn Brown, and CJ West continued to  provide the Bears with valuable production. In addition to key free throws down the stretch,  Cayton added nine points and five assists, while committing just one turnover in 30 minutes of play. Brown added eight points off the bench, including a three-pointer late in the shot clock midway through the third quarter, while West added seven rebounds, including a career-high five offensive rebounds, and two points in 12 minutes.

Freshmen Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu had 11 points apiece for the Ducks, as Cal held Oregon to 49 points, the fewest the Bears have allowed in any game all season.

Cal came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 13-4 lead early in the first quarter. Thomas – who was 5-22 over the Bears previous three games – started the game 3-3 from beyond the arc. The Bishop O'Dowd grad matched her season high with five made threes, also reaching the mark in the Bears season-opening win at Saint Mary's.

Both offenses stalled in the second quarter, combining for just 12 points. Cal was held to just six points, it's fewest in any quarter this season, but held the visiting Ducks to just six points as well on 3-13 shooting from the floor.

Cal grew its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Oregon 19-16 before the Ducks opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run, but the Bears never broke. The Ducks tied the game three times in the fourth quarter but were never able to take the lead.

The  Golden Bears outrebounded the Ducks, 40-26, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Bears close out the 2016-17 league campaign in Corvallis, facing No. 10 Oregon State at 11 a.m. on Sunday, February 26. The Beavers beat the Bears, 66-56, on January 6 at Haas Pavilion. The 10th-ranked Beavers enter the weekend tied with Stanford atop the Pac-12 standings, and face the 8th-ranked Cardinal Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
