BERKELEY – California had an agenda heading into its second series of Pac-12 play – go .500 and sweep Bay Area rival Stanford.
With a sunny backdrop in the brisk weather, the Golden Bears (20-8) accomplished both on Monday as they posted a 7-1 win over the Cardinal (16-13, 0-3) to tab their third consecutive sweep of their historical foes and evened their conference record to 3-3.
The Bears' bats were blazing to open their first of five games this week at Levine-Fricke Field, putting eight into play on the day.
A shared scoring effort was highlighted by
Annie Aldrete's second home run of the series. Aldrete posted a 2 RBI homer that also brought in teammate
Jazmyn Jackson in the bottom of the sixth to round out scoring for the Bears, who notched runs in 4 of 6 halves.
Jackson finished with a pair of runs after finding the plate in the bottom of the first inning as well. Jackson entered the field on a single and made her way around the bases on a walk from
Kobie Pettis, a fielder's choice on Aldrete's at bat, and a single from senior
Khala Taylor that brought her in.
Junior Pettis also found the dish twice – once in the bottom of the first and again in the bottom of the third. In the opening inning, Pettis was walked and had an easy stroll home from third after the bases were loaded and freshman
Bradie Fillmore forced another walk against Stanford.
Both
Kylie Reed and
Danielle Bowers notched a run for Cal, with Reed scoring on a Pettis' RBI single and Bowers finding her way from third base with a steal.
Zoe Conley punched her 10th win into the books with another solid effort and went 2-0, with a save against Stanford. The Bears' defense limited the Cardinal to two hits on the day, and did not allow a hit after the first inning.
Cal hosts its next contest Wednesday at 1 p.m. (PT) against UC Santa Barbara in Strawberry Canyon.
