Corzel Boosts Bears Past Aggies, 15-12

BERKELEY - Caroline Corzel scored a career-high seven points on a personal-best five goals in California's 15-12 victory over UC Davis Friday night from Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 4-10 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak against UC Davis. Cal leads the all-time series, 18-14.

Kirsten Swanson scored four goals, including going 3-for-3 in free-position shots, while Jena Fritts posted three assists. Elizabeth Pellechi tallied three points (2 goals, 1 assist), and Caroline Schlegel and Susie Ropp each scored twice. Corzel also paced the Bears with 10 shots on the night, six of which were on goal.

The victory was big for the Bears as they hope to earn their first berth into the MPSF Tournament since 2013. Cal currently stands in sixth place in the conference, which would get them in the tournament.

"I'm really excited, I thought the team did a fantastic job tonight with implementing the gameplan," head coach Brooke Eubanks said. "We also made a lot of good in-game adjustments, whether it was changing how we were forcing their attackers or moving on the offensive end. I really felt like the players were firing on all cylinders, and really taking care of business on both sides of the ball.

"It's a huge win. I actually did not know if the seniors had beaten UC Davis yet. This was everybody in the room's first win over Davis, and hopefully that will be a huge confidence builder into our last three games."

Cal wasted no time in getting the scoring going as the Bears notched the first three tallies of the night. After Schlegel scored her first goal, Corzel netted her first two of the night, with Fritts assisting on both goals, to give Cal an early 3-0 lead.

Swanson scored two of her four goals next, and the Bears found themselves with a 5-1 lead at the 18:23 mark in the first half.

One of the Corzel's goals later in the first half came when the shot clock was in the final seconds and the Bears were on the verge of a violation. She spun around the goal and took a shot to her right that beat the Aggie keeper.

"Amazing, she was on fire," Eubanks said about Corzel's play. "Not only five goals, but she had two assists, as well. She obviously was a huge part of our win today. It was exciting to see her have the confidence to make an impact like that on the game."

After Cal enjoyed a 9-6 lead at halftime, UC Davis scored the first three goals in the second half to tie the game at nine. The Bears answered with three goals of their own to regain the lead and control of the contest.

Both of Ropp's goals came late in the second half to clinch the big win for Cal.

In goal, Jenny Wilkens made nine saves and collected five ground balls.

Cal and UC Davis each had 29 shots on goal, but the Bears collected 14 ground balls to nine for the Aggies.

The Bears will celebrate tonight, but then get back to work tomorrow because Stanford comes to Berkeley for a Monday night tilt at 6 p.m. from Memorial Stadium. That game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks.

"I told the players to be excited about this win and celebrate for the rest of the day, and then tomorrow, we'll get together at 9 am and it's on to the next game," Eubanks said. "We have to focus on a huge opponent on Monday, who is not only a big school rival but somebody that we know well. It will be back to the drawing board and back to business."
