Bears Battle, But Fall To Stanford, 15-12

BERKELEY - California led early, and battled to the end, but Stanford defeated the Golden Bears, 15-12, Monday night from California Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 4-11, 2-4 on the season.

Continuing her hot streak from Friday's game against UC Davis when she scored seven points on five goals, Caroline Corzel found the back of the net four more times against the Cardinal, giving her 11 points in her last two contests.

Elizabeth Pellechi also garnered a hat trick, including going 2-for-2 in free-position shots, while Jena Fritts and Caroline Schlegel each scored twice.

Cal came out with the early offensive pressure, scoring four of the game's first five goals and taking a 4-1 lead at the 21:18 mark, but Stanford responded with a run of its own, tallying five of the next six scores to take a 6-5 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

After the teams went into the locker room tied at eight at halftime, the Cardinal scored the first three goals of the half to take control of the game. A goal by Fritts at the 18:10 mark cut the Stanford lead down to one, but that was as close as the Bears could get in the second half. Stanford scored four of the final six goals of the game to clinch the win.

Pellechi also scooped four draw controls. She and Corzel combined to take 19 of Cal's 27 shots on the night.

Jenny Wilkens made nine saves in goal, and she and Elizabeth Koehler each garnered four ground balls. Wilkens has now secured at least eight saves in 24 of 30 career games.

The Bears successfully converted four of their six free-position shot attempts.

Cal will continue its goal of gaining a berth into the MPSF Tournament on Friday at Fresno State. The Bears will meet the Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
