CORVALLIS, Ore. – A five-run fifth inning put No. 1-ranked Oregon State in command and the Cal baseball team couldn't match that offense to mount a comeback as the Bears dropped a 10-2 decision in the final game of three at Goss Stadium.
Cal (21-24, 12-12 Pac-12) found the going tough at the plate early in Sunday's game as the Bears matched up against a pitcher in Jake Thompson who entered the game with a 9-0 record and 1.07 ERA. The right-hander delivered another quality start, pitching into the seventh without allowing a run until the sixth.
When Cal did get the offense going, the Bears pushed a pair of single runs across in the sixth and seventh innings to hit the scoreboard.
Cameron Eden, who earlier in the game delivered a highlight-reel play at shortstop, brought
Andrew Vaughn in with a double down the left field line and, one inning later,
Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. did the same, bringing
Max Flower home with a double into the corner.
On the other side, Oregon State (38-4, 21-3) got its offense going right away, scoring a run in the first to take the early lead. The Beavers added a solo run in the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth as they sent 10 men to the plate and crossed home five times to make the score 7-0.
Cal collected its share of hits against the Beavers, finishing the day with 10.
Korey Lee tallied three hits on the day while Vaughn and Eden each had two to lead the offense. On the mound,
Zayne Patino offered Cal's most effective stint of the day, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Sunday's game wrapped up a stretch in which Cal played seven of its last eight games on the road and now the Bears return to Evans Diamond for their final six home games of the year, beginning with a Saturday-Monday series against Stanford next weekend. TCU pays a visit for a Thursday-Saturday series the following week and Cal brings the curtain down on the 2017 regular season with a trip to Arizona from May 26-28.
