SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night, dropping a 1-0 decision to San Francisco on a cool and foggy evening at Negoesco Stadium. The Golden Bears (2-1-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) outshot the Dons (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) 10-8 and held a 4-2 advantage in corners, but could not find an equalizer after San Francisco's Izzie Lueken scored in the 86
th minute.
The sophomore forward's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner, beating Cal goalkeeper
Emily Boyd with a strike to far post from 16 yards out. Lueken led San Francisco with three shots – all of which were on target – while
Abi Kim put all three of her shots on frame for the Golden Bears.Â
Coming off a thrill win over No. 24 Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium, Cal faced off against a spirited San Francisco squad in the Golden Bear's first road game of the year. The match was hard-fought from the opening whistle, with both teams eager to get into the attack. Boyd made her first save of the night in the opening ten minutes, denying the Dons with a diving stop in the eighth minute. On the other end, the Golden Bears consistently created chances of their own, finding success in the middle of the field. Freshman midfielder
Emma Westin was active on the left flank, serving several dangerous balls into the box. Kim and midfielders
Mia Corbin and
Daisy Cleverley had good looks of their own from distance that were turned aside by USF keeper Olivia Camera, who ended the night with six saves.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Cal came out strong in the second half, getting several great looks in the opening minutes. Redshirt senior
Kelly Fitzgerald played a short corner in the 47
th minute that found its way to fellow senior
Heather Walleigh. The defender from Dove Canyon, California ripped a shot with pace from outside the box that went just outside the post. Head coach
Neil McGuire's squad had another great chance just moments later, as Kim sliced through several defenders in the box but her one-on-one attempt was turned away by Camera. Cleverley pounced on the rebound, but the New Zealand international had her shot turned  away after a kick save by Camera.
While Cal controlled the tempo for the majority of the second half, the Dons settled in on their home turf and got into the attack in the later stages of the second half. Boyd made two of her three saves in the second half, including a nice stop in the 83
rd minute on an outside attempt by Lueken. However, the San Francisco striker found the back of the net just minutes later and the Dons defense held strong over the frantic final minutes, handing the Golden Bears just their fourth loss ever in the Bay Bridge series. Â
The Bears will look to bounce on Sunday afternoon, visiting UC Davis at 1 p.m. back in action on Sunday afternoon, visiting UC Davis at 1 p.m. PT. The Aggies (0-3-0) fell to Portland, 1-0, on Friday afternoon, their third one-goal loss on the season.
