BERKELEY – The Golden Bears have started building momentum after posting their second consecutive win with a 1-0 shutout of Yale on Friday at Edwards Stadium to even out their home record, now 2-2.
After California's double overtime 2-1 road win at Portland a week ago, the team's focus narrowed. This time the Bears, with a 3-2 overall record, relied on a score from senior captain
Jose Carrera-Garcia in the 51st minute to lead the squad past the Bulldogs (2-3).
Carerra-Garcia's first goal of the season was assisted by
Aravind Sivakumar who set his teammate up inside the box to angle the shot pass Yale goalkeeper Kees Schipper.
The Bears produced 12 shots on the night ahead of the Bulldogs 4, but their east coast foes recorded three of those on-goal forcing Cal to stay alert the entire game.
"It was a scrappy win, even though we came out hard," said Carrera-Garcia. "Once we got the goal, we dropped down a little and they pressed a little harder. However, we stayed composed and they only had four shots the entire game. That's big for our team."
In another solid performance, Bears goalkeeper
Drake Callender finished with three saves and delivered his second shutout of the season.
It was the first time the Bears have faced the Bulldogs in at least 19 seasons and the first for a
Kevin Grimes-led team. The Bears are now 8-0-2 against Ivy League opponents since 1999.
Cal's weekend continues on Sunday as the team faces USF across the bridge in a nighttime battle scheduled for 7 p.m. (PT).
